Wye College won the 1976 Inter-University Ploughing Match, held at Oxford in the pouring rain. I was only in the team because nob= ody else would volunteer and I wasn’t convinced that my ploughing ‘skills’ – honed whilst earning a living as a tractor dri= ver for an agricultural contractor in Kent, for whom quantity rather than quali= ty was the order of the day – would be quite what the judges were looking for. Whilst none of the team troubled the leader board, in very difficult conditions Andrew Hazell, Clive Robertson and I produced reasonable sco= res which in total won the day. W= e won the Harry Ferguson cup, which was about the same size and design as the FA = Cup and our success was announced to the College by way of a notice issued by t= he Principal, a copy of which we found today and that can be found here= . A mention in dispatches should go = to Steve Ellis, who coached the team.
